Redevelopment
is a process created by California State law to assist city
and county governments in eliminating blight from designated
areas and to attract development, reconstruction and rehabilitation
of deteriorated urban settings. Redevelopment
has proven to be one of the most effective ways to breathe new
life into areas plagued by social, physical, environmental and
economic conditions which act as barriers to new investment
by private enterprise.
Through
the redevelopment process, designated project areas receive
focused attention and financial investment to reverse deteriorating
trends, create jobs, revitalize the business climate, rehabilitate
and add to the housing stock, and gain active participation
and investment by citizens that would not otherwise occur.
The
City of Stockton Redevelopment Agency was formed in 1955. The
City Councilmembers are the government board for the Redevelopment
Agency. Our Agency has formed eight separate Redevelopment
Areas, but has merged four of the smaller areas into the project
areas that surround them. Two new project areas have recently
been added, North Stockton and Rough & Ready Island, giving
Stockton a total of six Redevelopment Project Areas.
