Household Hazardous Waste
What is "Household Hazardous Waste" (HHW)?
If you walk around your home, you will see a variety of products your family uses every day. Household products such as toilet bowl cleaners, paint thinner, pesticides, motor oil, and gasoline more become household hazardous waste when they are no longer needed. While these products are a part of our every day life and can seem innocent enough, they can be hazardous to you, your family and your pets if not disposed of properly.
What makes HHW so dangerous?
HHW is dangerous because it can be:
- Poisonous when swallowed, inhaled or absorbed though the skin;
- Corrosive and cause severe burns to skin and eyes upon contact;
- Flammable upon contact with the smallest spark or even a low heat source;
- Unstable if mixed improperly causing an explosion or emission of poisonous gases.
Education is the Key!
- Read the label. If you see a warning symbols, such as the ones listed below, take extra care when using the products!

- Store hazardous products according to the instructions on labels. If the label says "Store in a cool, dry location" make sure to do so!
- Unless the containers are leaking, always keep hazardous products in their original containers. These containers are designed specifically for the products.
- Make sure the containers always have readable labels. If a label comes off or can no longer be
read, make a new label with a permanent marker.
- Immediately clean up any spills or leaks according to the instructions on label.
- Read and learn more about other alternatives to using hazardous products.

Disposal of "Household Hazardous Wastes"
Disposal of HHW is just as important as their careful use! HHW may not only be harmful to you and those around you but also the
environment if not disposed of properly. HHW should never be thrown away in the trash!
To make sure HHW is handled properly, San Joaquin County has opened a permanent HHW disposal facility. The Household Hazardous Waste Consolidation Facility is open to the public three days per week, Thursday through Saturday, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. It is located at 7850 R.A. Bridgeford Street in Stockton, California.
It is quick and easy to use. Best of all, it is FREE to San Joaquin County residents! |
