Apartment-Condo Security Inspection Checklist

The following checklist will help you determine how secure your home is against being burglarized. Each negative response indicates your home could be at risk; however, this is by no means an absolute indicator. This checklist is designed to assist you in securing your home against a possible burglary.

Perimeter
Yes/No

Are address numbers located in a logical location and easily visible from all directions of the street?

Are address numbers a minimum of 10 inches in height?

Are address numbers contrasting in color with the building?

Are graphic display maps posted at all entrances, indicating "YOU ARE HERE"?

Is the property correctly posted in accordance with the Stockton Municipal Code (i.e., "No Parking on Private Property," "No Trespassing")?

Are first names or initials removed from mailboxes and/or intercoms?

Is the circuit box locked and secured?

Exterior Lighting and Shrubbery

Are all entrances, walkways, and garages well-lighted during all hours of the day and night?

Are all light bulbs protected against damage and easy removal?

Is shrubbery around entrances, walkways, and garages trimmed for visibility?

Are tree branches trimmed to prevent them from protruding over the building, allowing second-floor access?

Gated Complex

Are reminder signs posted at the entrance/exit (i.e., "For your security, STOP and wait here for gate to close behind you.")?

Does the complex use an intercom system for guests/visitors?

Do tenants have reminder signs that read, "Do you know who you are admitting?" posted near the intercoms in each apartment unit?

Parking Garage/Carport

Is the parking garage or carport area well-lighted during all hours of the day and night?

Do the numbers of the garage or carport parking stalls differ from those of the respective apartment/condominium unit numbers?

Is the parking area enclosed or underground?

If so, are the garage walls and ceilings painted white to reflect rather than absorb the light?

Doors, Locks, and Keys

Are secondary interior locks, which can be locked and unlocked from the inside only, installed on all door entrances?

    Are individual apartment/condominium door locks equipped with:
 

Interchangeable cores (locking mechanism allowing removal of interior locking cylinder to re-insert an entirely new cylinder for new occupants' safety)?
 

Restricted key blanks which cannot be duplicated?
 

Generic key blanks (requires skilled key cutters)?

Are all keys stamped, "Do Not duplicate"? (Note: this method alone is NOT considered sufficient.)

Are all door frames strong and tight enough to prevent forcing or stripping?

Are all doors of metal or solid wood construction?

Are all doors equipped with deadbolt locks?

Are all doors equipped with a wide-angled, optical viewer (peephole)?

Are strike plates secured with 2-1/2 to 3 inch screws?

Are all door hinges protected from removal from the outside?

Are apartment numbers installed above the doors?

Are apartment numbers contrasting in color with the building?

Windows and Sliding Patio Doors

Are sliding patio doors and/or sliding windows secured from being lifted out of the track?

Do all windows and/or sliding patio doors have adequate locks in operating condition?

Laundry Room

Is the laundry room locked at all times?

Is a large window installed in the laundry room for visibility?

Operation Identification

Does management have engravers to loan out to tenants for engraving personal property?
