Apartment Watch

What is Apartment Watch?

Apartment Watch is a crime-prevention program that enlists the active participation of citizens, in cooperation with law enforcement, to reduce crime in our community.

It involves:
  • Neighbors getting to know each other and working together in a program of mutual assistance.

  • Citizens being trained to recognize and report suspicious activity and identify vehicles that are not usually in the complex.

  • The implementation of crime prevention techniques, such as home security, Operation Identification, etc.

By cooperating with each other and the Stockton Police Department, YOU can help fight crime in our community the most effective way......BEFORE IT BEGINS!

Personal Security
Want to make life harder for criminals? By taking a few simple precautions, you can reduce the risk of becoming a victim of a crime and also discourage those who commit crimes.

Be Prepared
  • Always be alert and aware of your surroundings.

  • Develop a plan.

  • Avoid situations that would make you vulnerable to crime (i.e., overloading yourself with baggage, going into dark parking lots and alleyways, etc.).
Safety At Home
  • Use time devices to turn on inside lighting, T.V., stereos, etc.

  • Use peepholes for full view outside the door prior to opening the door.

  • Keep doors locked, even if you leave for just a few minutes.

  • Don't hide door keys outside; change locks if you are moving into a new apartment or house... you never know who has keys.

  • Use initials rather than your first name in the phone book and on your mailbox.

  • When returning home, have your keys ready.

  • Ask service company employees for I.D.

  • Anyone asking admission into the complex to do work for another tenant should be referred to the manager.

  • Avoid being in the laundry room by yourself, especially at night.

  • Don't open the door to a stranger requesting help or asking to use of your telephone; offer to make the call yourself.

  • If you see someone in your building who looks out of place or is acting suspiciously, contact the police immediately.
Vehicle Theft Prevention
Vehicle theft is skyrocketing. A vehicle is stolen every 20 seconds in this country. Don't make it easy for them. Prevention is the BEST deterrent
Here are simple steps to prevent vehicle theft:
  • Lock your vehicle, and take your keys... even for quick errands.

  • Close all windows, including vent or wing windows and sun roofs.

  • Park in well-lighted areas.

  • Don't leave packages or other valuables inside your car in plain view.

  • Install anti-theft hardware. Anti-theft hardware comes in three basic types and makes it harder for the thief to steal your car:
    • Alarms - These can be either noisy, blaring out a warning, or silent.
    • Disablers - Disablers prevent the car from starting. Electrical disablers have a hidden switch in the car or can be operated by a pocket transmitter.
  • Locks - Locks can be installed to prevent thieves from moving your vehicle or stealing accessories. They include:
    • Brake-pedal/steering-wheel locking device. - Interior/exterior hood lock.
    • Steering column ignition cover.
    • Battery lock.
    • Radio, tape deck, or cellular phone anti-theft device.
