You Are Not Alone -
Y.A.N.A.
What
It Is, and How it Works
You
Are Not Alone (Y.A.N.A.) is a telephone-reassurance
program maintained by the Stockton Police
Department Volunteers
In Police Service (VIPS). Y.A.N.A. is
designed to provide daily contact with individuals
with limited family or community interaction.
The program consists of the "Are You
OK?" computerized system (a product
of Northland Innovation Corporation), a computer,
a printer, a speaker, and a telephone.
Each
day, at a pre-arranged time, the program
automatically dials the participant's phone
number. If the participant does not answer
after a preset number of call attempts, an
ALERT is issued. Once the computer is on
ALERT, it prints out complete background
information on the participant, including
their nearest friend or relative, next of
kin, medical history, and their doctor's
name and address. A VIPS representative is
then dispatched to the participant's residence
to check on their well-being.
Participants can include the elderly,
latch-key children, handicapped individuals,
or persons who are homebound. Contacting
these participants on a daily basis helps
monitor their well-being and gives them a
sense of security.
