Identity Theft
Identity theft occurs when a person gains access to your information, and uses that information, without your consent, to commit fraud or theft. Victims of identity theft should start by filing a report with the Police Department. You should contact the Police Telecommunications Center at (209) 937-8377. After the report is filed, you will need to obtain a copy and keep it for your own records. The Stockton Police Department has put together a helpful brochure concerning what you need to know if you become a victim of identity theft (pdf). It is important that victims act quickly and aggressively to minimize the damage done by identity thieves.
