History

The club, started by a group of Stockton women who formed a history study club in 1893, was named Philomathean which means a "lover of learning". Club members held their meetings in various locations and decided to build their own clubhouse for their growing membership.

The Philomathean Club was designed by local architect W.E. Wood and was completed in February 1912 at a cost of $15,000. During the ensuing years, the members continued their strong commitment to community service.
