Long Term Delays/Projects:

Pershing Ave Widening logoPershing Avenue Widening Project

Estimated Completion: December 2008

The Project

The area on Pershing Avenue being studied extends from Meadow Avenue to Thornton Road. San Joaquin County Department of Public Works is the lead agency with the participation of the City of Stockton and the San Joaquin Council of Governments. The Alternatives Analysis has included the following tasks:

  • Analyze traffic operations in the corridor
  • Consideration of the City of Stockton adopted Stockton Streets Improvements Project Specific Plan that identified improvements for the Pershing Avenue corridor as well as the Hammer Lane intersection
  • Identify roadway improvements needed to enhance safety and improve operations, such as pedestrian access and entering/exiting private driveways
  • Identify potential drainage improvements
  • Determine right-of-way needs, if any
  • Perform an environmental constraints analysis
  • Solicit and listen to public input

After the public meeting on July 24, the alternatives analysis will be presented for approval to the San Joaquin County Planning Commission and the San Joaquin County Board of Supervisors.

The estimated completion of the construction project is December 2008. Measure K (the voter-approved, half-cent sales tax) will fund the project).

Airport Way Beautification Project

Phase I Estimated Completion: Mid Summer 2008

The Project

Begining on Tuesday, April 1, 2008, traffic on Airport Way will travel on two lanes, rather than four lanes.

Currently, Airport Way has two lanes in either direction between Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard/Charter Way and Tenth Street. Traffic will be moved to the outer edges of the Airport Way roadway to allow construction of a new median. Construction crews will remove existing roadway, install curbs, and grade for new asphalt in center of raodway. This stage of the construction will last until mid-summer of 2008.

The work is being done as part of the Airport Way Beautification Project. A project design has been approved which will include improvements such as decorative hardscape, landscaping, fully landscaped median, street curb, gutters, and a meansering walk with landscaping. The project will also include traffic signal modifications at Eighth and Tenth Street, street lighting, paving and drainage. An associated project will install a traffic signal on Airport Way at Second Street. A public art piece will be placed at the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard/Charter Way. The city has contracted with DSS Company for construction of the project.

Please use caution while driving through the construction site

If you have any questions, please contact City of Stockton Public Information Officer Connie Cochran, (209) 937-8827.
