Stockton Goes Green
City Adopts Green Building Policy
(Stockton, CA) – City of Stockton buildings are going green. The Stockton City Council adopted a resolution approving a Green Building Policy and an additional resolution to support the Cities for Climate Protection Campaign by participating as a member of the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives – Local Governments for Sustainability Association.
By joining the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives, the City will conduct a local emissions inventory and forecast of green house gas emissions; adopt an emissions target; draft an action plan; implement the plan; and evaluate progress and update the plan. Under the Green Building Policy city facilities will be Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified. The City of Stockton is the first city in the Valley to adopt LEED standards and to join the Cities for Climate Protection Campaign.
City departments have been working on green initiatives throughout 2007, including adopting policies and procedures to use hybrid and Ultra Low Emission Vehicles and using biodiesel fuels. City employees have also increased recycling efforts through audits and the recycling of batteries, portable electronic devices, cans and bottles, and actively working to insure that construction and demolition debris is diverted from landfills. Energy audits have served to reduce energy consumption and water conservation measures have been implemented at City parks and landscaping, in addition to encouraging businesses and consumers to conserve through the development of a Green Car Wash Program and participation in a Water Conservation Rebate Program for energy efficient washers and toilets. City purchases are also green and now restrict the purchase of Styrofoam products through the City’s office products supplier.
