Get Fit! Stockton Kicks-off with 5K Walk and Fitness Festival

(Stockton, CA) – On Saturday, June 14, 2008, Get Fit! Stockton, a city-wide wellness program to promote exercise and improve health in the community, will kick-off with a free Fitness Festival for everyone and an optional 5K Walk event for those who want to get out and get moving! The City of Stockton and community partners interested in the health and wellness of our citizens are joining forces to provide information and resources about fitness, health and wellness, from 9:00 a.m. – noon, at the Weber Point Event Center downtown Stockton, where Miner Avenue meets Center Street.

“We’re very excited about this first-time event for Stockton,” said Councilmember Susan Eggman. “It’s not just an event; it’s the beginning of a movement within our community – a commitment to health! With gas over $4 a gallon, it’s time we get out of our cars and get moving under our own power.”

Community members interested in participating in the 5K Walk can register at any of the following locations: City of Stockton Parks and Recreation, 6 E. Lindsay St.; Fleet Feet at Lincoln Center, 6541 Pacific Ave.; Downtown Stockton Alliance, 343 E. Main St.; or 8:00 a.m. the day of the event at Weber Point Event Center.

The free Fitness Festival will include healthy food vendors and food preparation demonstrations, resources for nutrition, exercise ideas, fitness demonstrations, games for children and families, prizes and giveaways. Vendors and organizations interested in participating may contact Stockton Parks & Recreation Department at (209) 937-8206.

“We’re going national with this challenge,” continued Councilmember Eggman. “We’re asking everyone to register as part of our Get Fit! Stockton group on the President’s Challenge web site. The site has great ideas for health and fitness, a cool mapping feature to customize biking, hiking or running routes, and tools for tracking your progress.”
