Fats, Oils and Grease (FOG) + Food Waste = SSO

Clogged Sewer Pipes = Trouble in our Streets
|
When fats, oils, and grease wind up down the drain, it sticks to the insides of the pipes in your home, business, or in the main sewer pipes under the streets. Eventually the build-up causes the pipe to clog. This can cause a sewer line to back up into the street or even break. Then we have an SSO.
SSO's are trouble for us all. They are unhealthy for children or pets that might come in contact with them. SSO's are usually cleaned up at the site, but sometimes they spill into the gutters and into the storm system before we can get there. Raw sewage in our waterways causes pollution that kills the wildlife, causes foul odors, and makes our waterways unsafe to enter.

"Keep it off the streets"
Anyone who sees water and sewage bubbling up from a manhole or pooling in a grassy area should immediately report the incident to the City Service Center at 937-8341.

| Here are some ways that you can help prevent SSOs: |
|
In the Home:
- Never pour grease down sinks or toilets.
- Collect cooking fats, oils and greases into a container and dispose of them in the garbage.
- Before washing, wipe fats, oils and greases from pans with a paper towel.
- Catch food scraps with baskets or strainer in sink drains. Throw scrapes in the garbage.
- Never pour fats, oils, and greases down the drain.
For Restaurants and Building Owners:
- Recycle grease and oil.
- Dry wipe pots, pans and dishware prior to washing.
- Don’t put grease or oil into sinks, floor drains, or onto a parking lot or street.
- Use a grease trap or interceptor that is designed, installed and maintained correctly.
- Never put solids into great traps or interceptors.
- Check and maintain grease traps and interceptors regularly.
- Provide regular training to employees on proper disposal of fats, greases and oils.
NEVER POUR FATS, OILS AND GREASES DOWN THE SEWER DRAINS.
