Human Resources -
What Happens After the Test?

Once you've completed the job application and taken the
test(s), what happens next?

1. Upon completion of all steps in the examination process, an eligible list is developed listing successful candidates. Candidates are placed on the eligible list in rank order, highest to lowest score. For those examinations with multiple parts, such as written and oral, a percentage of both scores is taken, then added together to determine the final score.

2. Once the list is approved by the Civil Service Commission, the names of the top ten candidates are sent to the hiring department for the selection interview. Those candidates are notified by mail to contact the hiring department to schedule an interview. The hiring department may hire any of the candidates certified.

Note: If you are certified for a vacancy and do not wish to be considered at that time, you may request a waiver by completing the bottom of the letter sent to you.

3. If you are selected, you will be notified by the Human Resources Department and requested to complete a pre-employment physical, including a drug screening administered by the City Physician.

If you are not selected, you will be notified and will remain on the eligible list up to one year. The eligible list may be extended for an additional year upon approval by the Civil Service Commission.

Note: Do not quit your current employment until you are notified that you have successfully completed the pre-employment physical and have been approved for hire.

4. New employees generally start at the beginning of a pay period, which is either the 1st or 16th of the month. You will be scheduled for a new employee orientation the morning of your first day. Then it's time to get to work!
