The City of Stockton is covered by a Civil Service System. There are a number of steps that are necessary parts of the recruitment, testing and selection process. Listed below are the typical steps that maybe included in the process, however, each recruitment is independent and may not include all steps listed.
The Human Resources Department announces the vacancy by publishing a job announcement. Copies of the job announcement are available in the Human Resources Department.
The vacancy is advertised in a variety of media, including The Record (Stockton's daily newspaper). Information about current job openings may also be obtained by:

- Watching the City of Stockton Government Access local cable channel 97
Application should be completed on-line and all questions should be answered. If a particular question does not apply to you, indicate "not applicable." Do not indicate "see resume" for any information requested on the application.
It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure the application reaches the Human Resources Department by the closing time on the final filing date.
Applications are reviewed to determine which candidates, based on their education, experience, and background best fit the needs of the City of Stockton at that time. Those applicants deemed best qualified for the position in question will be invited by mail to participate in the examination process.
The examination process may include one or more of the following types of examinations:
Typically multiple choice or true/false questions
An interview with a panel of 2-3 individuals knowledgeable about the job being filled
Hands-on demonstration of a candidate's ability to perform certain task, such as typing, driving a vehicle, welding, etc.
A series of different tests designed to determine the candidate's ability to perform certain duties. These are typically used for management level positions.
A test consisting of a appraisal of training, education, experience, or work history, of an applicant without the necessity of their personal appearance at a specified place.
