Fire Department Training Division

Our Training Division facility consists of two classrooms and administrative offices, a drill tower, and drill grounds. The drill grounds include areas for extrication, confined space, technical rescue as well as hose and ladder evolutions. When not in use by the department, the classrooms and grounds are available to other public safety agencies.

The Division of Training coordinates suppression, recruit and EMS training, testing and program development for its 276 members. It is the intent of the Division of Training to provide the highest level of safety and service to the public and the department through quality education, attention to tradition and innovation, while being vigilant in the recruitment and promotion of qualified personnel.

Areas of Responsibility

In Service Training – Consists of weekly street drills, monthly Officer Training sessions, Quarterly Tower Drill evaluation, yearly state required certifications (EMS & HazMat) and required drills to assist in maintaining top firefighting performance levels.

New Recruit Training - Recruits attend a 16-week Academy where they spend 640 hours of instruction in basic firefighting skills. In addition, new recruits receive State Firefighter I and II, Hazardous Material FRO, Rescue Systems I, and ICS 100 and 200 certification.

EMS Administration – Coordinates programs, training and CE for CPR, EMT and Paramedic recertification.

Emergency Communication Division – Manages both emergency and non-emergency communications. Interdepartmental liaison for contract agencies

HazMat & Technical Rescue – Coordinates programs, training and CE for HazMat, Swift Water Rescue , Rescue Systems I and II, Trench Rescue and Confined Space Rescue certification.

Safety - The Division of Training staff serve as Incident Safety Officers at all Multiple Alarm incidents.

Research and Development - The training staff is responsible for research and development of new policy and updates regarding, equipment, techniques, programs, and products.

Technical Services – Provides photo and video support for training and emergency incidents. Safety equipment/clothing is disbursed and monitored through the Division of Training

Drivers Training – Provides California Department of Motor Vehicles Class B testing and monitors break-in of new engineers and manipulative testing.

Citizen CPR Classes – Provides support and facilities.

Auxiliary Firefighters – Oversee the coordination of auxiliary firefighter training and equipment.

Legislation/Contract – Maintenance and monitoring of long and short range contracts within areas of responsibility. The Division monitors state legislation effecting the department and the fire service in general.
