Fire Department-
Administrative Policies and Procedures
Hood and Duct Systems
Note: If cooking appliances located beneath a commercial hood have been exchanged, relocated or modified in any way from the original installation, it is the policy of the Stockton Fire Department to require a new fire suppression system be installed that meets UL 300 Standards.
UL 300 recognizes that the majority of restaurants change the cooking oil from animal fats to vegetable oils over the past decade. Vegetable oils heat to higher temperatures creating a greater challenge to the old Ansul and Pyrochem suppression systems. We cannot guarantee that the old systems will put out the fire. Only systems designed and installed to UL 300 Standards can be modified and upgraded.
New fire suppression systems require that plans and fees be submitted to the Fire Prevention Division, 345 North El Dorado Street, Stockton, CA 95202. As a service, we maintain a list of active contractors in our area who can provide bids for new installations or provide the maintenance and service required by the California Fire Code.
Residential Drug and Alcohol Abuse Recovry and Treatment
Under Proposition 36, voting Californians chose to provide drug and alcohol abuse recovery and treatment rather than incarcerate these persons in prison. Typically we are finding existing, non-conforming Group R Division 1 occupancies being modernized as treatment centers that also provide accommodations. Regulations for Group R occupanicies are found in the California Building Code.
Available in our area are one-story and two-story existing nonconforming motels. These buildings do not meet newer building codes for fire resistant construct and requirements for automatic sprinkler protection. They usually lack property line protection from adjacent buildings.
License descriptions may read for "22 Adults and 48 Children". Considering that children may include infants and nonambulatory children and because of the constuction features of the facilities, the Stockton Fire Department takes the position that an automatic fire alarm system is required. A manual system will not be accepted.
Smoke detection must be provided in all rooms with the possible exception of bathrooms. An operating detector must cause a general alarm for the building and send a signal to a listed central station that will notify the fire department. A UL Certificate must be issued for the system indicating a contract is in place for scheduled testing and maintenance of the fire alarm system. |
