Why Should You Learn CPR?
Perhaps someone you love is suffering from heart disease. Maybe the nature of your job requires that you be prepared to handle medical emergencies. Or you may believe, as many people do, that knowing the skills for CPR simply makes you a more useful member of your community.
Whatever your reasons, it is important to remember that CPR can help save lives. Your hard work and study can make a difference. In the 1990's, cardiovascular disease accounted for nearly 1,000,000 deaths per year and 500,000 due to heart attack. About two thirds of deaths from heart attack occur before the victim reaches the hospital. Many of these deaths can be prevented if the victims get prompt help. Someone trained in CPR provides proper lifesaving measures until trained professionals take over.
Victims
of cardiac arrest may return to a productive life with prompt
initiation of the American Heart Association Chain of Survival,
(Early Access, Early CPR, Early Defibrillation and Early Advanced
Care). Without prompt initiation of the Chain of Survival, permanent
brain death due to lack of oxygen will occur.
