Building and Housing Board of Appeals

Meeting Day and Time:
Third Wednesday of each month at 5:45 p.m. in City Hall

Legal Authority:
Board established by Stockton Municipal Code Section 13-204 and Section 14-405. Amended by Section 13-204 by ordinance No. 11-95 C.S. - July 12, 1995.

Appointing Authority:
Mayor with advice and consent of City Council
Term of Office:
Four (4) years
Membership:
Seven (7)
Residency Requirements:
Must be a resident of the City of Stockton
Remuneration:
$20 per meeting (not to exceed $120 per month) Remuneration established by Council Ordinance No. 11-95 C.S. - July 12, 1995.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • 1 General Building Contractor
  • 1 Plumbing Contractor
  • 1 Electrical Contractor
  • 1 Mechanical Contractor
  • 1 Engineer or Architect
  • 2 from the lay community

A member shall be neither an elected officer nor an employee of the City of Stockton, but he/she shall not be disqualified by membership on or employment by any other board, commission, agency or authority of, or created by or for the City of Stockton.
Function of the Commission:
  1. To hear appeals of administrative decision from aggrieved parties relative to the application of the general building, zoning, and related regulations of the City of Stockton including Mechanical Code, Plumbing Code, and Electrical Code.
  2. To grant variances in appropriate cases from the administrative application of the regulations where the securing of the public welfare will not be compromised.
  3. To hear appeals of administrative decisions from aggrieved parties related to the application of the Housing Code or related sections of the Stockton Municipal Code which has resulted in action declaring structures to be hazardous and requiring their abatement.
