The City of Stockton is currently in the process of developing a Climate Action Plan to help mitigate the amount of greenhouse gas (GHG) emission within our city.
What are Greenhouse Gases?
Greenhouse gases occur naturally within our eco-system and help to trap heat within our atmosphere, thereby allowing the planet to maintain a temperature suitable for life. The problem we now face is that through human activity, greenhouse gases have increased beyond their naturally occurring state and are creating the phenomenon known as global warming.
The two greenhouse gases of most concern are carbon dioxide, or CO2 and methane. Emission of CO2 gasses are produced whenever fossil fuels such as oil, natural gas, gasoline, diesel fuel and coal are burned in order to produce electricity, heat our homes and offices or power our vehicles. Methane, or C04 is a byproduct of organic waste and sewage decomposition.
Climate Action Plan Advisory Committee
The City of Stockton has recently established a Climate Action Plan Advisory Committee consisting of representatives from environmental, non-profit, labor, business and developer interest. This committee will ensure that all aspects of the community are taken into consideration before adopting a Climate Action Plan for the City of Stockton.
Climate Action Plan Advisory Committee Meetings are open to the public.
