Edward J. Chavez joined the Stockton Police Department in August 1973. He began as a Patrol Officer and worked his way through the ranks. He was appointed to serve as acting Chief of Police in February 1993, and was appointed Chief of Police in August 1993.

In the past, Chief Chavez was assigned to various divisions, including Patrol, Administration, and Personnel & Training. As Chief of Police, he was responsible for the overall operation of the Stockton Police Department.
