City Council Committee -
Community Improvement and Crime Prevention

This committee meets on a quarterly basis and includes representation from Neighborhood Watch groups and other organized groups, such as Neighborhood Betterment Committees, with Community Service Officers, Code Enforcement representatives, Councilmembers, city and county staff. The committee’s focus centers on a universal problem-solving effort. Reports will be included on graffiti abatement, the COPS program, Code Enforcement, and juvenile justice issues.

The purpose of this meeting is to exchange information concerning neighborhood problems and share success stories. All interested parties are welcome and encouraged to attend. The suggestions, ideas, and experiences that you share will provide the necessary information to help us better serve the community. Representatives from Police, Public Works, Code Enforcement, Library, Fire, and Parks & Recreation will be present for the question and answer session at the conclusion of the meeting.

Children are welcome, as a supervised play area will be set side for them while parents attend the meeting.

• Develop and recommend ideas for promotion of the graffiti abatement telephone “hotline” number;
• Attend sentencing of graffiti vandals in order to communicate the desire for firm and consistent punishment;
• Develop suggestions for community programs such as letter-writing campaign to the newspaper, judiciary, etc.;
• Organize and conduct an awards luncheon toward the end of 1995, recognizing the accomplishments of individuals, businesses, and organizations in the abatement of graffiti; and
• Receive periodic reports from the Police Department regarding graffiti abatement actions.
