Historic Bob Hope (Fox)
Theatre in Downtown Stockton
The History
The
Historic Bob Hope (Fox) Theatre has a long and colorful history.
It opened on October 14, 1930 as the largest vaudeville
house in California at that time. It is a large theatre equipped
with a complete stage, fly area, and orchestra pit, dressing rooms
and has approximately 2,000 seats.
One
of the jewels of the theatre was the $40,000 (in 1930) three manual
Wurlitzer pipe organ with twin pipe lofts. In 1979, the Fox was
entered into the National Register of Historical Places and today
Is one of only two movie palaces in the Central Valley. |
Proclamation
- 1930
To All Northern California:
Life in Stockton and its surrounding communities
takes on a new aspect with the opening on October
14 of the FOX CALIFORNIA THEATRE. |
As
the finest theatre in inland California we may
point with pride to this latest addition in our
civic welfare. The best in entertainment will
be ours, brought to us concurrent with other important
metropolitan cities.
THIS edifice is a monument of the confidence which Fox West Coast Theatres
have in our locality. They have invested over half million dollars
in building a show-place for our comfort, and will spend thousands more
each month in bringing us the newest and finest productions. |
| WE
can evidence our appreciation by supporting, not
only the opening celebration, but also the week-to-week
programs by which such an institution is maintained.
May I call upon each of you to consider the FOX CALIFORNIA
as your theatre, as it is to be dedicated to you,
and to take it into your heart as part of your
civic pride. |
