Stockton Receives Phoenix Award for
Dean DeCarli Waterfront Square

The City of Stockton has been recognized by the National Phoenix Awards for Excellence in Brownfield Redevelopment as an outstanding example of successful brownfields redevelopment. This prestigious award will be presented to the City for the Dean DeCarli Waterfront Square at the National Brownfields Conference in Charlotte, North Carolina on November 15, 2002.

The Phoenix Awards are nationally recognized as the outstanding award for achievement of excellence in brownfield redevelopment. The award honors those who are working to solve the critical environmental problem of transforming abandoned industrial and downtown areas into productive new uses.

Stockton's Waterfront Square was chosen as the outstanding project from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Region 9 which includes all of California, Arizona, Nevada and Hawaii. The Executive Committee of the Phoenix Awards was impressed with how Stockton coordinated the brownfields cleanup requirements with the design of a beautiful and functional public space.

The National Brownfields Conference is an annual gathering of approximately 5000 people from around the country that are interested in cleaning up abandoned or underutilized properties, and finding ways to facilitate in their redevelopment and revitalization.
