| A
whimsical steel pergola and accompanying benches and archways
was installed at the Swenson Park view park near Swenson Park
Golf Course (Benjamin Holt Drive and Alexandria) in late January
2005.

Artist
Joe Tyler of Surprise, Arizona, provided the welded and scultped
steel design and installation. Tyler was one of 35 artists who
submitted qualifications for a variety of public art projects
in 2002. He and two other finalists offered proposals for
the project. After Tyler's selection, he and city staff met with
area homeowners, who unanimously approved the project design at
this busy intersection.

The $30,000 project is funded through a city ordinance that requires
a percentage of every municipal capital improvement project be
dedicated to a public art component. The project that funded
this art was an irrigation improvement project at the Swenson
Park Golf Course in 2002.

The
pergola is constructed of welded steel, approximately 10' wide
x 20' long and 16' high, with a sculpted cupola and two relief
sculpted oak trees at both ends of the pergola arch. The pergola
features birds and ‘critters' on the vine-clad structure and a
weather vane element on top. Four sculpted benches, approximately
2' wide and 6' long will be installed along the pathway under
the pergola. Two welded steel, sculpted arches are installed
where the pathway meets the sidewalk along Benjamin Holt Drive
and Alexandria.
