Public Art in Stockton - Weber Avenue
 |
Scott
Runion, the public artist selected for the Weber Avenue Street
Beautification project, has completed tree guards for the enhanced
streetscape on Weber Avenue in downtown Stockton.
The tree guards are attached at the base to a tree grate, both of
which serve to protect new trees and serve as a beautiful improvement
to the streetscape by providing vertical and horizontal art elements.
The tree grate has a water lily and fish theme while the tree guard
has six cattails emerging out of the rippling water of the tree
grate. The green stalks and leaves of the cattails will be powder-coated
in green for a hard and durable surface. The cattail heads have
been treated with liver of sulphate to create a rich brown color
as in nature. According
to Scott, "the cattail design, water lily and fish design
of the tree grate merges the regional and historical heritage
of the Delta and the waterways without the problems of actual
water". |

| The
grates and guards also reduce maintenance. Each tree guard is 5
feet tall and 18 inches across. The tree grates are four feet square.
