Stockton Arts Commission seeks award nominations
The Stockton Arts Commission is seeking nominations for the 2008 Arts Awards. Deadline for nominations is June 2, 2008.
Community members are invited to submit the names of individuals, organizations and businesses who have shown substantial support of the arts in Stockton.
Categories include the STAR Award (Stockton’s Top Arts Recognition), the Patron Award, the Volunteer Award and the Career Achievement Award. Recipients will be honored at a celebration at the Bob Hope Theatre on October 17, 2008.

2007 arts awards recipients included:
Tony Washington received the STAR (Stockton’s Top Arts Recognition). Washington is well-known as the founder and executive director of Apollo Nights Talent Show which is now in its 10th year.
The Patron Award was presented to S.O.M.E: Sponsors of Musical Enrichment – a 28-year volunteer fundraising organization that has raised nearly $2,000,000 for numerous arts organizations and individuals since its formation.
Margaret Zuckerman was awarded the Volunteer Award for her work with many arts organizations including the Haggin Museum, the Stockton Symphony and the Stockton Civic Theatre.
Former Stockton native Donald Corren, who now resides in New York, was presented the Career Achievement Award for his successful career as an actor, writer, and pianist in professional theatre, television and cabaret.
Dean Gorby, Administrator of Visual and Performing Arts for Stockton Unified School District, received an Outstanding Achievement in Arts Education Award for his leadership in arts curriculum development.
An Outstanding Achievement in Music Education Award was presented to Rita Wilcox for her thirty-year commitment to teaching music as a profession and as a volunteer.
The Mayor’s Award was presented to The St. John’s Chamber Orchestra and their co-founder, Peter Ottesen, for bringing an exciting music series to the downtown area each winter.
