Annual Arts Awards
Held in October, this annual dinner honors local artists of
outstanding achievement, arts patrons, and the careers of such ex-Stocktonians
as actress Janet Leigh, authors Maxine Hong Kingston and Leonard
Gardner, and playwright Philip Kan Gotanda. |
Marian
Jacobs Literary Forum
The forum is involved in a variety of literary activities throughout
the year. Its Speaker Series has brough several major literary
figures to Stockton, including Larry McMurtry, Adrienne Rich, Ray
Bradbury, Ken Kesey, Maya Angelou, Peter Mathiessen, Lawrence Ferlinghetti,
Carolyn Heilbrun, Isabel Allende, Tony Hillerman and US Poet Laureate
Robert Pinsky.
The writing contest component of this program won a major 2000 award
from the California Alliance for Arts Education Short Story Competition.
Every year, Central Valley writers and compete for gift certificate
prizes from event underwriters, Barnes & Noble Booksellers.
Winning works are excerpted and read at an awards reception.

Asparagus Festival
Arts
& Crafts Show
Every April in downtown Stockton. Many of the finest arts
& crafters in the West exhibit at this juried show, which
has been praised by The Crafts Fair Guide; Sunshine Artist has
ranked it in the top 200 shows in the America; and the 1998 ArtFair
SourceBook, which has ranked it 164 among the 500 best arts &
crafts events in the United States. |
Consultations
Giving Free Advice: SAC staff and members provide promotional,
organizational and fund-raising assistance to artists and arts organizations.
Commissioners serve as jurors of area art, logo, poster, photography
and performing arts competitions. |
MailSAC
Mailing List of nearly 5,000 Names: Names and updated addresses
of Stocktonians identified as arts supporters, participants, donors
and activists are coded for special interests (art, dance, music,
theatre, literature) and made available to non-profit arts organizations
for a $25 fee. |
Networking
With Other Arts Agencies and Organizations: SAC networks
with other local, regional, state and national arts services agencies,
and Commissioners and staff also serve on the directorial boards
of Stockton arts, civic and cultural organizations and on various
City committees. |
