City of Stockton Grants Program

Revitalization

Bob Hope Theatre

Bob Hope TheatureThe Stockton Fox Theatre was originally opened in 1930 and was the finest movie palace in the central valley. Over the years the theatre has been home to live performances as well as motion picture. In 1979 the Fox Theatre was placed on the National Register of Historical Places, but the Theatre began to fall into disrepair.

In 1995 the renovation of the theatre began and the renovation of the magnificent theatre could not have been completed with use of grant funding. The City and the Friends of the Bob Hope Theatre were able to secure $1.95 million in grant funding to complete the project. Among these grants were: two grants from the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development in the amount of $201,000 and $290,000, $250,000 from Private Corporations, a grant from the California Heritage Fund in the amount of $300,000, various other state grants totaling $385,000, and a Private donation from Alex G. Spanos in the amount of $500,000.

DeCarli Plaza

Decarli PlazaRedevelopment of the DeCarli Plaza was seen as one of the major catalyst projects in the revitalization of the downtown water front. The site of the Plaza was once a covered portion of the Stockton Channel plagued with pollution and was on the EPA’s Brownfield list. Funding for the redevelopment came in part from a Brownfields Economic Development Initiative (BEDI) and Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds as well as Section 108 loans from the EPA. The $6 million project was the City’s first successful Brownfield Redevelopment and winner of the EPA's prestigious Phoenix Award for 2002.
