Nominations and Elections

Governing Statutes

Except as provided by the City Charter, all elections are held in accordance with the provisions of the State of California Elections Code.
(SCC Art. VII, SCC Article IX)

Municipal Elections

City of Stockton municipal elections are consolidated with the statewide direct primary and general elections in each even-numbered year, or in the event no statewide direct primary or general election is held, the election is held on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in June and or November, respectively, in each even-numbered year.

Elected Officials

The City Council consists of six Councilmembers and the Mayor nominated and elected to office by the voters of the City of Stockton. Each member is elected for a four-year term.

The Mayor is elected by the voters at large. If a candidate for Mayor receives a majority (50% plus one) of all votes cast for mayoral candidates at the primary election, that candidate is elected. If no candidate receives the majority vote, the two candidates receiving the highest number of votes cast will face off at the general municipal election.
(SCC Art. XI)

The two councilmember candidates receiving the highest number of votes at the primary election from their respective districts will face off at the general municipal election. The candidate receiving the majority vote by the City's voters at large is elected.
(SCC Art. VII)

Every member of the City Council, including the Mayor, is subject to recall. The procedure for recalling an elected official is set forth in the City Charter.
(SCC Article VIII).
