Toys

toys & writing instrumentsChildren in the 19th century played with toys, including dolls, marbles, and cast-metal figures. In the latter part of the century, more and more people bought toys from stores or catalogs, rather than making them themselves.

ad for doll headsThe toys above are from families who lived near the laundry. We didn’t find very many toys at the Chinese laundry. What do you think this might mean?

Do you think children in the 19th century had less fun because they had fewer toys than many kids today?

What could future archaeologists tell about you from finding your toys?
