“Latin Magic” Leads Entertainment Line-Up for
Stockton’s All-America City Block Party

One of Stockton’s most energetic and versatile bands, “Latin Magic” will lead the entertainment line-up for the City’s upcoming All-America City Block Party celebration, on Friday, August 27, starting at 5:30 PM. The group, which has played on the same concert bill with such classic acts as Tito Puente, War, and Sheila E., will perform for two hours on Center Street, in front of the Civic Auditorium. Two all-star cultural dance groups, Hawaiki Nui and the Pearls of the Pacific, will perform in the amphitheater at McLeod Lake. The very popular hip hop dance group, “Sik Wit It” will also perform there.

The top-notch entertainment will be the centerpiece of an event designed to celebrate the City’s designation as an All-America City for 1999. The festivities will open with a ceremony led by Mayor Gary A. Podesto. Christopher Gates, the president of the National Civic League, will present the All-America City Award plaque to the Mayor after the Stockton All-America delegation, “Team Stockton,” performs its winning presentation.

The event’s major sponsor, Allstate Insurance, will provide free ice-cream and apple pie from Marie Callender’s to the first 3,000 people. Pepsi West will give away free Pepsi. A rock climbing wall, orbitron, large slide, bounce houses, kiddy Ferris wheel and pony rides will be part of a child's and teen play area along Center Street. Strolling clowns, balloon artist, and face painters will round out the activities. The Stagg High School marching band will also perform down Center Street. Gymnasts from the City’s gymnastics program will show off their talents at Martin Luther King Plaza.

The party will end with a short fireworks program over McLeod Lake, which will be sponsored by the Health Plan of San Joaquin. The award-winning Stockton “Stars and Stripes” baton twirlers will perform with lighted batons and fire twirling just before the fireworks begin. The group has won numerous local and regional awards and recently performed at Disneyland.

Approximately 30 food and information booths will also be a part of the grand celebration.

The party will be broadcast live on Media-One’s Channel 30.
